Thanks for posting such a heartfelt comment Christy. I think Crisis Teams do a wonderful job, when the authorities commit the funding they need. I said in my talk at this event though that there are considerable implications for care if the people we turn to for support also have statutory power over us. Your point about losing your children is spot on, and could also be applied to people fearing for losing their freedom, their right to vote, their right to be heard. I've often felt a system of advocacy is necessary, to ensure people have someone on their side during disputes who can champion their rights. Sadly this costs money of course, but there may be ways to engage former or current service users in the process.

So thank you for sharing, and my thoughts go out to you and your family for your difficult journey. I hope 2012 is a wonderful year for you all.

I lost my little boy in 2007 and was understandably devasted. The aftercare I received was practically zero.

I have since had my daughter but have continued to suffer from depression on and off. A visit to my doctor resulted in taking antidepressants that initially made me much worse to the point of not being able to function.

It caused a lot of devastation for both myself and family.

I love my daughter more than anything in the world but on medication I felt nothing for anyone but myself.

I came off medication and though not happy am far better than when I was prescribed it and am now fully capable of looking after my daughter. I have a good family behind me and an excellent partner or god knows what may have happened.

I was referred to the crisis team who after an avaluation told me that my thoughts and feelings were normal under the circumstances. Though the team were nice and supportive I am plagued by fears that this will somehow impact on me in the future.

I am also scared that I could be seen as an unfit mother though I am an excellent mother and my daughter is very well cared for, if not a little spoilt as she is are only one.

I have read a lot of posts where woman are really suffering but are terrified to go to their doctors and report their feelings for fear of their children being taken away.

I think more support should be out there for struggling parents who fear the system may take their children away if they mention anything.

I hope this gives you another opportunity for discussion.

Many thanks,

Great post! I completely concur!

Mind Apples is a recent find for me and I love what you are doing with it.

In a startling feat of syncronicity, we are in the process of setting up "MindPirate" in the Manhester area along the same lines. Helping people hunt and appreciate their own treasure.

How Fantastic! :)

Thanks Jonathan. I remember Matthew last year describing the RSA's role as "enhancing human capability to solve our own problems". I definitely think that's where Mindapples sits too, and also of course related projects like my colleague Tessy's Social Spaces project. It would perhaps be good to convene some kind of research community around this?

Great post.

"Nudge is powerful, but unless it builds conscious agency and involves individuals in the decision-making process, it can only disempower the people it serves."

Well said. At the RSA we have been arguing the same sort of thing for a few months now, and I agree there is a major tension between nudge and the Big Society.
